International Challenges
Southern Area Hospice Services are now recruiting new trekkers for the Mexican Trek in November 2007. This will be the fifth overseas trekking challenge, which the SAHS have organised. The 8-day challenge through the rainforests and volcanoes of Mexico involves a 67km trek through spectacular scenery, including sub-tropical rainforest and a 4200m climb to the summit of Volcano de Perote. Trekkers will experience fantastic view from the tops of high extinct volcanoes, follow a trail through low lying rainforest, visit traditional Indian villages nestled in hidden gorges and catch a glimpse of ancient Indian way-of-life that has changed little over the years.
For the more adventurous, the climax is an 18km white water rafting experience through a beautiful canyon of volcanic rock on the Rio Pescades. If you would like to take part in this challenge and enjoy an experience of a life time while raising valuable funds for your local hospice, please call Joanne at the fundraising office on (028) 3025 1333.
Our South African trek, in October 2005, was very successful with over £139,000 being raised for the Hospice. The 39 strong group completed a gruelling 110kms trek in South Africa’s Cederberg region (north west of Cape Town), covering up to 20kms every day in varying weather conditions. Day time temperatures reached 34 degree celsius on some occasions, whilst at night the group braved sharp drops in temperature as they camped out under the stars.
